Welcome to the Official Comedy Club Blogger for Suffern High School

This is the very first post on the Official Comedy Club Blogger for Suffern High School, where you can get the latest news, events, games, topics, scenes, & etc. for the Comedy Club. The purpose of this is so the people of Comedy Club can let the current president/vice president know what they think of the club, what they want more of, and especially what they think is wrong with the Comedy Club. Originally my idea was to create a web site for the Comedy Club, but I figured it would be too high end and take too much time, but the president of the 2007-2008 fiscal year Andrew brought it to my attention that making a Blogger would be much easier. Therefore this has come into existence....

Comedy Writing Secrets by Melvin Helitzer:
Comedy Writing Secrets by Melvin Helitzer is a book synonymous throughout college comedy courses throughout the United States. In this book there is a lot of information that can help the person who thinks they aren't funny at all turn themselves into a comedy writing genius. The fact of the matter is that everyone has the potential to be funny, but they just need to find that potential and use it. This book is the very best way to find such a thing because if you can write comedy then all you need to do is go up there and perform it... That, on the other hand, is a totally different story.

NEWS!!! : Welcome to Surreality... Hold your gears in place, the year end event is near.

- Funding - We need a significant amount of funds in order to go to a Comedy Club Event.
- Fun - A bake sale is nice, but it's not Comedy... Unless you tickle the customer, I don't think they'll be buying anything then... A year end show is very fun and allows the members to express themselves and just plain and simple go all out with their best material
- Preparation - I'll have it taken care of.... I'll hand out fliers make posters and give hype for the show
- Ultimate Comedy Exhibition - Like "Last Comic Standing" only everyone in the school is invited... They will all go head to head and ultimately we will show the finals at the show...

More News

Now that the whole Crash Course in Comedy thing on Comedy Central's website is over, I decided to become more motile in my approach to this whole learning comedy stuff. I was looking on the net and found a great video oriented thing on Expert's Exchange. Check it out, it's located on the right side of the page under the links section.

About The Expert:

Les McGehee is a working award winning comedian and improvisation pioneer who has entertained and trained millions of happier people throughout the US and the world for 20 years. He has toured through countries and performed thousands of shows. Les and his comedy companies have been featured on ABC WB Fox Family and PBS. His writing credits include a book and many successful scripts and published articles. He has played with famous and not so famous stars of stage and screen including appearances with cast members of Saturday Night Live, Whose Line is it Anyway, MadTV, The Simpsons and others. He has provided improv training to Fortune 500 companies including ATT, IBM and Dell as well as government agencies and prestigious graduate schools of business. He was a founder of the Comedy League of America, Comedy Sportz, National Comedy Theatre, IMPROV MBA and other companies and toured with the National Comedy Theatre's “Tour for the Troops” in 2004 and 2005.

Description:

Summary: “So what is the deal with airports? You walk in and everybody is in such a hurry. Its like the time your dad left without you at the gas station and made you chase the car down the road while your brother and sister are in the back sit giving you the finger...what?...why is everyone leaving?...sir, please don't throw your beer at me...why is my microphone off?...” Stand up comedy and improv comedy is a difficult career and making it is no laughing matter. It takes work, practice, persistence, and wit sharper than Oscar Wilde's pen. It is important for a comedian to be relevant, creative, intelligent, and accessible, even when objects are being thrown at him or her from an angry customer in the audience.

In this free video series, let comedian Les McGehee school you in the art of humor as he teaches you how to do improv comedy. Learn different improvisational techniques and games, how to apply those techniques to different situations, and how to use the art of improv comedy to make people laugh. This step by step comedy lesson is sure to make you laugh and get you closer to your dream of telling jokes for a living.

The Ultimate Comedy Guide

This will be updated often at the most because as most things that aren't history, they will be rewritten...

THE ULTIMATE COMEDY GUIDE:

Comedy is something that dates back to no ends and most people that achieve it in it's natural form are generally the ones who have the highest standards in their personalities...

Tip #1:

Let Loose

Most people are afraid to go up their and make asses out of themselves, but those same people don't realize that making an ass out of yourself is a huge part of comedy. If you can't do that then you might as well just go up to audience members and tickle them because it won't be easy to make them laugh otherwise... This is something a lot of people miss. Want to see someone who really lets loose? Look at Jim Carrey, he is an icon when it comes to characters...

Tip #2:

What is funny to you isn't always funny to everyone else...

The type of comedy that prospers above all else has to be one that goes in a general aspect. Stupidity is the most common and general type of comedy there is and examples lie in the many celebrity bashings we witness daily and if that's not enough look at stuff like Mind of Mencia; a show that directly targets stupidity and literally staples the bulls eye to it's back. Look at stuff on BET and Wild n' Out, I think there are some people that might annoy you a lot meanwhile others might be falling out of their chairs laughing at the very same thing you can't stand. Hell, you might like the Daily Show and those same people would look at you funny every time you laughed at Jon Stewart's political wisecracks

Tip #3:

Face Contortion and Body Language

This has to do with Letting Loose, but it goes more into the aspect of giving a visual for the people... If a joke you make isn't funny, most of the time the body language you use and the faces you make will make up for it.

Tip #4:

Don't overthink before you act

When you overthink you overact and screw up, I know this personally. This isn't limited to Comedy either... Think about the Tests you take and how sometimes you look back and feel bad because you screwed up on something you knew just by overthinking it. Try to blindly act so you feel more natural when going up there.

Tip #5

Be Selfish & Raise Yourself

When people look at you and you feel nervous it's a good thing because you can get your thoughts together faster, but if you're going up there and you're still nervous then you can freeze up or choke. Generally this applies to everybody, when they're sitting and watching they feel like they can do a better job, but when they're up there it's like everyone's ready to pounce on them and tear them limb from limb. Try to be a little self centered like you're only trying to satisfy yourself instead of everyone else (not like that -_-), your standards will raise and you'll feel more confident... Just don't over-do it...

As for part 2, you can't rely on the other people up there and keep feeding off their heat. The reason there are teams in many improvisational comedy shows is because they want you to compete instead of rely on each other. If you have to keep relying then how are you going to do when you want to do stand-up and have nobody to rely on. In this case rely on yourself... This way you can do your thing and eventually you will be able to coordinate with everyone while performing, at first this is something good to go by.

That's all for now...

NOTE:
Just a friendly reminder, to those of you who are frustrated with locating your videos on google video because of the enormous influx of YouTube videos simply type in "site:video.google.com" after your search keywords, but don't forget to leave a space after your search term because it won't work otherwise... This same thing works if you type in "site:youtube.com" as well... Cheers!

P.S. School friendly videos will be posted up as well through the website http://www.motionbox.com/ let's just hope they don't block this one as well....

Jokes:
There is an Indian, an African, and a Russian on a train. They're all going towards the same destination at the farthest end of China while they're all sitting around eachother in a train car in Southern Africa. They get into discussion about religion, politics, and then they make a bet. The bet is that they all can find their home country by sticking their hand out of the window one after the next, but if they bring it in too soon then they lose their end of the bet. The African is from Northern Africa, the Russian is from Moscow and the Indian is from Delhi. First the African sticks his hand out of the window and he brings it back in. It's dripping with water and he says "I know this is where I come from because it rains a lot here." He turned out to be correct... The Russian is next and he sticks his hand out of the window and brings it in after a long while. While shivering he exclaims "I know this is where I come from because it snows all too often here." He turned out to be correct... Finally the Indian sticks his hand out of the window... He brings it back in, but there is neither rain nor snow on it... The other two look at him and start to laugh "How do you know this is India? No rain or snow, there is just a darker hand in this train..." The Indian smiles and says "When I put my hand out of the train, what did I have on my wrist? Now it is gone!" the other two laugh hysterically and he joins in... All in all, he turned out to be right...

VARIOUS SEGMENTS

What is Going On In the Comedy World?

The Showbiz Show with David Spade has Returned(2005-???) and Airs on Thursdays @ 10:30
- Jon Heder was on Last Week to Promote "Blades of Glory" and David turned it around as an insultfest on Jon... Concluding it with a segment called "Are You Smarter Then Jon Heder?" (a play on 'Are You Smarter Then a Fifth Grader') where an audience member would go head to head in trivia with Jon... David picked out a Punk-Rock Chick who in actuality lost to Jon, but David said she won anyway. Jon seemed taken back by David, but he was also acting strange throughout the entire interview most likely as a part of the sketch...
- David reinstates the "There I Said It Segment" first with a bit on Ugly Betty and how unfitting a name it was for the show and then on Supermodel Shows the following week
- David also did various other things like make fun of Lost and how it may be coming to an end, plus Celebrity Stupidity (i.e. Nicole Richie driving on the wrong side of the road) and he even brought back an old thing where he would impliment himself into shows to make fun of them at the beginning of each Showbiz Show... Other things included making fun of Supermodel Naomi Campbell and Heather Mills McCartney who lost her leg in a car accident and is on Dancing With the Stars...

Halfway Home made it's debuet on Wednesdays after South Park
- I saw the first episode and I hated it, I think there are others who may appreciate it more, but I thought the whole NARC thing got played out and the whole home-made explosive thing was stupid. It's like a criminal version of Reno 911, another show I just can't bring myself to like

South Park (Wednesdays @ 10) Gone Overboard?
- From making fun of Scientology with an episode featuring the infamous "Come Out Of The Closet" Segment to "The Dookie In the Urinal" to "N_ggers" turning out to be "Naggers" + midget bashing to the Butters & Cartman incident, it seems that South Park is getting more and more out of hand... Talking to people at school reveals that it's just getting more disturbing, not funnier...

Mind of Mencia makes it's long awaited return...
- Mind of Mencia has been a staple in the line of shows on Comedy Central and it proves itself once again by coming back again...
- I saw a stand-up of Carlos' in 1999 and then his No Strings Attached special and then his show... From the 1999 joke of "No Mexicans in Taco Bell Commercials" to the "No Strings Attached Retard" jokes it seems that Mencia is degenerating in his skills. The more he dishes out, obviously, the less he is left with. Just like Dave Chappelle, his comedy is getting drier and drier (although "The Lost Episodes" turned out to have some really funny 'stuff'). I remember in 2005 when all he had was a commercial describing the shocking stuff he says on the show and just a little bit with him calling a manly girl a man while she's gardening and then simply putting his hand over his mouth to show that he made a no-no. Now he's parading around with his brother Joseph who is supposedly carrying a huge speaker system which has a microphone attached to it that Mencia uses to insult people on the street by telling them what he thinks. I think that the simplicity of the first season jokes were better because Carlos is running the show into the ground with this new stuff. Hopefully he spent his time off making a bunch of good and new material rather then just relaxing.
